PANACRYL SUTURES

The Panacryl Suture Story

Panacryl sutures are a type of stitch that are meant to be absorbed by the body after surgery so that they didn't need to be removed at a later date. The Panacryl suture came onto the market in 1999 and was removed in July 2002. Marketed by the Johnson & Johnson division of Ethicon, Inc. they were considerred a unique product for their combination of absorbability and strength. Panacryl sutures were supposed to be able to support a wound for up to six months.

What is a Panacryl Suture?

A suture is a piece of thread that is used to stitch together incisions and tears in tissue during surgery. The Panacryl suture is created using a specific type of synthetic braided absorbable material. They were used for orthopedic and general soft tissue surgery. They were typically used for ligament and tendon repairs as well as for reattachment of ligaments and tendons to the bone.

Problems with Panacryl Sutures

Panacryl Sutures have been associated with side effects such as high rate of infection, non-absorbtion, scar tissue forming around the suture and causing a bump under the skin, the stopping of healthy tissue growth which caused tiny tunnels to form around the incision area, and sutures being pushed out of the skin when the body rejects the material.

Complaints Against the Sutures

There have been numerous complaints claiming that the sutures caused infections and/or were not absorbed by the body. Most of the problems are related to use of the sutures in the soft tissue lower abdominal area, often requiring additional surgery to remove the infected or problematic sutures. Patients who required these additional surgeries could take up to a year to recover. Some cases have been reported where Panacryl sutures have caused infections, granulomas or other problems a year or more after the surgery in which they were used.

PANACRYL SUTURES NEWS

In many cases, Panacryl sutures allegedly do not dissolve away, but fragment and float through body tissue, creating numerous dangerous and painful infection sites. (July-02-06) PANACRYL SUTURES: LAS
