MEDTRONIC SPRINT FIDELIS
Leads in the Sprint Fidelis defibrilator have been found to be defective, leading to the suspension of sales of the Medtronic device.
The implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) that link the heart to the ICD are apparently fracturing, causing the devices to deliver unnecessary shocks, or failing to deliver shocks when necessary.
Serious complications, and even deaths have been linked to the faulty device. Medtronic estimates that more than two percent of patients fitted with Sprint Fidelis leads will suffer a lead fracture within 30 months of lead implantation.
Medtronic has offered to cover the cost of the faulty lead and contribute up to $800 to pay for medical costs not covered by insurance, when one of these defibrillators fail.
However, so far they have not offered to pay for the cost of replacing a lead that has not malfunctioned, meaning that patients who are worried about a potentially faulty lead will have to pay for the surgery on their own.
Patients should contact their doctors to determine whether a Sprint Fidelis lead was used with their defibrillator, as the leads were used with other defibrillators than just Medtronic.
