DIETHYLSTIBESTROL
A recently released study has found that the daughters of women who took DES (Diethylstilbestrol) while pregnant, have twice the risk of getting breast cancer.
DES is a synthetic estrogen which was intended to prevent miscarriage and other pregnancy complications.
Researchers believe that daughters exposed to DES in utero received high doses of synthetic estrogen, which caused the development of additional breast stem cells that now increase their rist of contracting breast cancer.
Up to 10 million women took DES during pregnancy which has lead to the possibility of millions of children and grandchildren with an increased risk of breast cancer.
DES daughters are also at risk of clear cell adenocarcinoma (cancer of the vagina or cervix), reproductive trace defects, infertility and pregnancy complications.
DES sons are at higher risk for abnormal growths on their testicles (epididymal cysts) that are usually not cancerous, but may become painful.
DIETHYLSTILBESTROL NEWS
Recent studies of nonsteroidal estrogen diethylstilbestrol (DES) show that those whose mothers received the chemical during pregnancies between 1948 and 1971 were two to three times more likely to develop breast cancer. (Dec-18-06) Food Consumer: DES and Breast Cancer
