AMO LENS SOLUTION EYE INFECTION
A rare, but potentially blinding eye infection that has been linked to the AMO Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution by the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta. Advanced Medical Optics ("AMO") of Santa Ana, California, manufacturers of the product, have voluntarily agreed to pull the soft contact lens solution from the market.
An investigation by the CDC linked the product to an infection known as Acanthamoeba keratitis – inflammation of the cornea. If left untreated, the infection has the potential to cause blindness.
138 cases of acanthamoeba keratitis have been confirmed by the CDC since January of 2005. Normally only 2 or 3 cases a year are reported. Of the 46 confirmed patients interviewed by epidemiologists, 39 patients – or 85 per cent – wore soft contact lenses. Three individuals wore hard contacts, and four did not use either.
Early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment of Acanthamoeba Keratitis. Symptoms may vary greatly from person to person and can include:
- Eye pain
- Eye redness
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Sensation of something in the eye
- Excessive tearing
