MRI SKIN DISEASE
Gadolinium-based contrast agents are injected into patients who undergo MRIs or MRAs, in order to clearly see internal organs, tissues and bones.
The FDA has just issued a black box warning for all gadolinium-based contrast agents, as patients with kidney or liver disease may develop the serious, and even fatal skin conditions nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) or nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NFD).
NSF/NFD symptoms usually begin with thickened and hard, rough skin, next leading to difficulty moving limbs, or sometimes restricting movement entirely. This disease can also lead to death. Symptoms appear in patients as early as two days after injection, but may take as long as 18 months to appear.
So far, NSF/ NFD has only been observed in patients with kidney disease or renal dysfunction.
NSF/NSD is a very serious disease. To date, there is no successful treatment for this condition. If you or someone you love has suffered any of the above side effects as a result of exposure to Gadolinium, you should see a doctor immediately.
